NUNM’s School of Undergraduate Studies is seeking an adjunct academic faculty member to develop the Static Point Massage Techniques course. Individuals developing courses at NUNM are contracted to deliver a completed syllabus, course outline and teaching materials necessary to properly deliver a course. Program outcomes and course competencies have already been developed; many learning objectives have as well but the developer will have the flexibility to further develop these learning objectives with the dean. The specifics about course delivery and pedagogy will be discuss with the right candidates. Course developers perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with the philosophy, mission, policies, and procedures of the University and appropriate to the individual assignment.

 

Course NameStatic Point Massage Techniques

Term: Will be taught Fall 2019

Course Credits: 2 lecture, 1.5 lab credits (development will be paid at 1.75 credits, or $1820)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

NOTE: The development of this course is to be performed face to face, with the dean of the school of undergraduate studies at NUNM, in Portland, Oregon

The first in the series of NUNM massage courses deals with static point techniques. The overall goal of the massage courses at NUNM is to utilize the law of parsimony, combined with current knowledge of physiological effects of massage and point work, to deliver classes that teach the fundamental ideas behind each technique. This process will touch upon specific named techniques (those most commonly-used by massage therapists), in an academic setting to deconstruct the rationalized mechanisms often used to explain their effects. The desired result is that students graduating from this course have a deeper, more complete understanding of how various massage techniques and applied forces work, how best to apply these techniques and forces, and how to teach patients about them in the most accurate and ethical ways.

 

Competencies. At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify static point techniques most commonly utilized by massage therapists
  • Explain how the human body can respond to and is effected by the forces applied in static point massage
  • Demonstrate active listening and motivational interviewing in the history-taking portion of your massage visits
  • Explain and apply the principles of SOAP noting and proper record keeping procedure including intake procedures
  • Explain contraindications to and/or risks of static point massage therapy
  • Apply your knowledge of static point techniques to construct and demonstrate 30 and 60 minute massage sessions using static points.
  • Explain potential benefits of static point massage therapy

REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have education, experience, skill and knowledge in the area they will be developing; preference will be given to those who have teaching and/or course development experience. This is face to face course development so the applicant must live in or within commuting distance to Portland, Oregon, USA.
