Adjunct Faculty - Dual ND/LAc Rotation

Adjunct Clinical Faculty members perform instructional and clinical duties and responsibilities in accordance with the philosophy, mission, policies, and procedures of the College and appropriate to the individual assignment. The relationship of the faculty member to the student is one of teacher, mentor and facilitator of learning.
This position will be the supervisor for a concurrent Naturopathic/Chinese medicine clinical rotation at the NUNM Health Center Lair Hill campus clinic. The purpose of this rotation is to allow students who are pursuing both ND and MSOM degrees to practice integrative naturopathic and Chinese medicine during the final year of education. The rotation occurs once weekly for 5 hours beginning the week of January 6, 2020. Candidates must be well-versed in preventive medicine and treatment of patients seeking both primary and complementary healthcare.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Education Duties:
- Develop and manage educational and evaluative experiences for a diverse population of students.
- Collaborate with administrators and faculty in assessment of individual teaching effectiveness and the effectiveness of the curriculum while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.
- Assess student learning outcomes and make or recommend appropriate course or program modifications based on results.
- Review, update, and maintain syllabi in collaboration with other faculty and administrators in accordance with NUNM policies, procedures, and practices.
- Establish and maintain student instructional records, and submit grades in a timely manner.
- Complete and submit self-evaluations, reports and other documents as assigned or requested in a timely manner.
- Maintain familiarity with and comply with all NUNM policies and procedures.
- Faculty are strongly encouraged to attend the student graduation commencement ceremony.
Clinical Education Duties:
- Attract and manage a patient base of sufficient volume and diversity to allow assigned students to meet all educational objectives of the particular clinical experience.
- Comply with all applicable standards, rules, regulations, and laws applicable to clinical practice whether established by NUNM, the State of Oregon, or other governmental or regulatory body including DEA regulations.
- Practice in a manner consistent with established standards and expectations of the profession and the community.
- Practice in a manner which models best practices in clinical practice and in the business of medicine.
- Manage a diverse population of students in clinical learning environments.
- Attend monthly clinical faculty meetings.
- Clinical faculty members are required to comply with professional continuing education requirements of their license.
- Participation in NUNM’s faculty development plan: NUNM has identified eight outcomes for its faculty with corresponding competencies. These outcomes will serve to identify what an NUNM faculty member is able to do and will constitute the baseline from which all faculty development initiatives are derived; including promotion in rank, annual performance evaluation, awards for excellence and achievement, conference attendance, and training opportunities. Depending on available resources, the college will strive to provide to its faculty required and elective participatory courses and training in support of their development. Required participatory courses are identified annually by the provost and program deans.
Professional Development Duties:
- Maintain current credentials and content expertise, including DEA licensure.
- Maintain an awareness of new instructional technology and advances in teaching and learning theory and practice, with particular to attention to medical education, clinical education, and adult learning.
- Maintain an awareness of new developments in the practice of naturopathic primary care and Classical Chinese medicine and/or other areas of content expertise as appropriate.
- Acquire new knowledge and skills for enhancing and developing instructional programs.
Acquire new knowledge and skills for the practice of naturopathic and classical Chinese medicine and/or other areas of content expertise as appropriate.
- Participate in formative and summative evaluation processes to insure excellence and continuous improvement as an educator and clinician.
The individual must have post graduate education and demonstrated experience and/or skills in the area of naturopathic primary care medicine and Chinese medicine. ND degree from a CNME approved college and license to practice naturopathic medicine in the state if Oregon; master’s level AOM degree from an ACAOM accredited college and a license to practice acupuncture in the state of Oregon Post-Graduate medical education/ND residency is preferred.
Clinical: Minimum of five (5) years post-graduation, private clinical practice. Candidates must be able to demonstrate competency commensurate with the full scope of their naturopathic medical license and acupuncture license.
Course and curriculum design experience is desirable.
Must possess the following qualifications.
- Unrestricted license to practice Naturopathic Medicine (ND) and Acupuncture (LAc) in the state of Oregon.
- Current DEA License, or eligibility to apply for DEA license.
- A strong drive to serve the University and the naturopathic and classical Chinese medical professions.
- Knowledge of current trends in clinical pedagogy and curriculum development
- Experience using an Electronic Medical Records system.
- Knowledge of instructional discipline to a depth and breadth appropriate to the assignment.
- Skill in instructing socioeconomically, educationally, and culturally diverse students.
- Skill in using technology to effectively communicate with students, colleagues, and the community at large.
- Skill in working both independently and as a team member.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective, collaborative, and collegial relationships with colleagues, students, staff, administrators, alumni, and the public.
