The Phlebotomist collects clinical laboratory specimens according to NUNM policies and procedures. This position will then process, store, and prepare samples for transport. While not collecting samples the Phlebotomist will perform patient check-in, order entry, and customer service duties. Provide logistical support to other lab staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Obtain accurate and reliable blood and other specimens according to policies and procedures; safely prepare samples for transport or processing.
Accurately identify patients, perform order entry, and label samples according to work instructions.
Prioritize workload according to urgency of request; manage patient flow.
Provide instructions to providers, students and patients in proper specimen collection, answer related questions accurately.
Respond to all customer service situations with a positive, friendly, professional demeanor. Work creatively to solve problems, prioritize duties, and maintain a healthy working atmosphere so that productivity and positive employee relations are maximized.
Work closely with laboratory staff to achieve optimal efficiency of work flow; perform administrative duties as needed during down time.
Maintain accurate records and reporting according to standard operating procedures.
Uphold appropriate professional behavior at all times including reporting to work as scheduled and on time and following the required dress code.
Ensure the work area is kept clean, safe and orderly; adhere to established policies and procedures pertaining to safety and accident prevention; comply with all OSHA guidelines.
Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA guidelines.
Attend laboratory staff meetings and/or training as required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy training course required, Certification as RPT(AMT) or ASCP or equivalent preferred; 1 year experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
