As part of the curriculum at NUNM, Standardized Patients provide in-class patient simulation and may choose to undergo physical examinations to support student learning. Standardized Patients also participate in exams that students take to measure their educational progress (OSCES).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Standardized Patients have the opportunity to model for invasive or non-invasive exams.

INVASIVE EXAM MODELS ($41.50 an hour)

  • Gynecology Model:

Gynecology models work in our reproductive labs. These models undergo exams completed by students, sometimes in teams, who are practicing pelvic exams or diaphragm/cervical cap fittings. Gyn Models can be any gender with uterus and vagina.

  • Reproductive Model:

Reproductive models work in our reproductive labs. These models undergo exams completed by students, sometimes in teams, who are practicing genitalia exams. Repro Models can be any gender with a penis. Genitalia exams include external inspection, palpation, and assessment. There is not a prostate or rectal exam for this model.

  • Proctology Model:

Proctology models undergo rectal examinations. Students will perform digital rectal exams (with prostate palpation in models who have prostates) and anoscopic exams. Models can be any gender.

  • Eye Model:

Eye models have their eyes dilated. Models are screened before given midriatic agent (pupil dilator) and have their eyes dilated so that students can view inside their eyes for a one-hour session per eye. Students in class perform ophthalmoscopic exams.

NON-INVASIVE EXAM MODELS ($31.00 an hour)

  • Cardio Model:

Cardio models must have a diagnosed heart murmur that can be readily heard through a stethoscope.  Cardio models undergo an exam where students auscultate and palpate their heart. Models may be asked to stand/squat or raise their legs while the student listens to their heart.

  • OSCE Model:

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is the clinic entrance and exit exams for our Naturopathic Doctor students. OSCE models are responsible for memorizing a specific case and diagnosis that they will portray for the student. The model will need to provide memorized information to the student during the taking of the history of present illness, review of systems, and family and social history. Models will need to judge when it is appropriate (or not) to give information, and respond appropriately during the physical examination.

Models must follow guidelines regarding confidentiality of the exam process, exam cases, student and physician information, and give constructive criticism and training in a positive manner. Case training is provided before every OSCE.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Gyn/Repro Models: Experience being a medical model before, with being a reproductive model preferred.

Proctology Models: Experience being a medical model before, with being a proctology model preferred.

OSCE Models: Must be experienced with patient portrayal/standardized patient scenarios. Acting, improvisation, and knowledge of medical terminology are helpful but not critical. Models will need to have good memorization skills. Must have good work habits, be punctual and prepared, and avoid unnecessary absences.
