POSITION DESCRIPTION
Provides maximum protection for the safety and security of university personnel, students, visitors and National University of Natural Medicine assets. Represents the University by giving directions or information when requested. Recognizes that “service” is key to the mission of the Public Safety/Security Department. This position is expected to work Friday and Saturday evenings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides a safe and secure environment. Performs security duties either at a fixed post, or while making rounds of campus buildings and grounds. Checks for unauthorized persons, general security violations, or safety hazards. Reports all problems and emergencies to immediate supervisor and documents incidents with a written report.
- Verifies the appropriateness of persons on campus. Checks ID badges and ensures that employees and students are permitted in appropriate buildings. Ensures that visitors comply with regulations and schedules.
- Provides security escorts to employees, students and visitors. Completes a security escort assignment throughout the university including all buildings and parking lots. Provides escorts with service and friendly demeanor in order to reinforce comfort level.
- Assists with campus parking issues. Assists employees, students and visitors with any parking related issue. Notifies supervisor to call for tow truck and/or police services as may be necessary. Maintains parking lots and parking lot equipment, and reports all problems to maintenance.
- Unlocks and locks facilities. Unlocks secured areas when requested by authorized persons. Ensures that areas be secured when appropriate.
- Maintains daily patrol log. Documents all safety/security actions taken during a tour of duty. Makes entry on patrol log at least once every 30 minutes. Submits completed log to database at completion of tour. Documents specific incident reports including the taking of photographs.
- Act as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Clery Act. Monitor for and report criminal activity to appropriate agencies and in accordance to campus/department policy.
- Assist crime victims in a variety of ways including, reporting on their behalf, maintaining their confidentiality, and referring them to campus and outside resources.
- Follow the University’s emergency procedures to assist students, employees and guests during emergencies or instances of personal crisis.
- Provide security coverage on the weekends and/or special events and public assistance that include lockout services and information.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED or technical school required; and one year experience in the security, life safety, or law enforcement fields. Experience in a Higher Education setting is preferred.

- Most importantly must be able to work flexible work hours that include weekends and evening hours and attend required trainings and meetings.

- Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills, conflict resolution and professional diplomacy when interacting with faculty, students and staff.
- Must be detailed oriented as well as maintain a broad awareness in order to efficiently write reports and log daily activities.
- Requires valid driver’s license and car insurance acceptable to University’s insurance provider. CPR certified or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. DPSST Unarmed Security Certification required.
