POSITION DESCRIPTION

Full-time Academic and/or Clinical faculty are professional educators with the primary responsibility of providing a quality primary care naturopathic education to NUNM ND students. Faculty members perform instruction-related, clinical and other duties and responsibilities in accordance with the philosophy, mission, policies, and procedures of the University and appropriate to the individual assignment. The relationship of the faculty member to the student is one of teacher, mentor and facilitator of learning. This particular position will have a strong focus on basic science and biochemistry academic instruction.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Academic Education Duties:

• Teach/facilitate assigned educational experiences, including activities such as lecture, clinical practice, laboratory, seminar, problem-based small group study, standardized patient exercises, and elective courses.
• Develop and manage educational and evaluative experiences for a diverse population of students.
• Collaborate with administrators and faculty in assessment of individual teaching effectiveness and the effectiveness of the curriculum while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.
• Assess student learning outcomes and recommend appropriate course or program modifications based on results.
• Review, update, and maintain syllabi in collaboration with other faculty and administrators in accordance with NUNM policies, procedures, and practices.
• Post and maintain office hours as stipulated in current policy.
• Establish and maintain student instructional records, and submit grades in a timely manner.
• Complete and submit self-evaluations, reports and other documents as assigned or requested in a timely manner.
• Maintain familiarity with and comply with all NUNM policies and procedures.

 

Clinical Education Duties:

• Attract and manage a patient base of sufficient volume and diversity to allow assigned students to meet all educational objectives of the particular clinical experience.
• Comply with all applicable standards, rules, regulations, and laws applicable to clinical practice whether established by NUNM, the State of Oregon, or other governmental or regulatory body including DEA regulations.
• Practice in a manner consistent with established standards and expectations of a patient-centered primary care home, the profession, and the community.
• Practice in a manner which models best practices in clinical practice and in the business of medicine.
• Manage a diverse population of students in clinical and other learning environments.
• Participate in clinic outreach and other activities designed to market the NUNM clinics.

 

Scholarship Duties:

• Participate in a well-conceived and developed plan for scholarship as approved by the dean that is supportive of the mission of the University and reflective of a strong interest in one or more of the following areas:
• Basic science research
• Educational scholarship
• Clinical scholarship
• Clinical faculty members are required to comply with professional continuing education requirements of their license.
• Participate in NUNM’s faculty development activities.

 

Professional Development Duties:

• Maintain current credentials, content expertise and participate in professional development activities.
• Maintain an awareness of new instructional technology and advances in teaching and learning theory and practice, with particular to attention to medical education, clinical education, and adult learning.
• Maintain an awareness of new developments in the practice of natural medicine and/or other areas of content expertise as appropriate.
• Acquire new knowledge and skills for enhancing and developing instructional programs.
• Acquire new knowledge and skills for the practice of natural medicine and/or other areas of content expertise as appropriate.
• Participate in formative and summative evaluation processes to insure excellence and continuous improvement as an educator and clinician.
• Prepare for and seek promotion in academic rank.

 

Professional Services Duties:

• Engage in activities that promote the cohesiveness of the learning community and/or enhance the relationship of the University with the broader community.
• Serve as a faculty advisor to assigned students.
• Attend and participate in University meetings and functions including, but not limited to, commencement and convocation.
• Collaborate with the Director of Admissions and the Admissions Department to participate in the recruitment and evaluation of prospective students.
• Participate in University committees as assigned.
• Collaborate with members of the academic community in activities to ensure continuous quality improvement of the institution and its programs, such as participation in planning forums, preparation of institutional self-studies and related activities.
• Contribute your professional skill, knowledge and expertise to a variety of activities in support of the university, community and naturopathic medicine profession.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

The individual must have the education, experience, skill and knowledge in the area of focus they will to be teaching students. Doctoral degree (i.e. ND, DAOM, DC, MD, PhD, DO, etc.) or other appropriate terminal degree. Course and curriculum design experience is desirable.

Clinical: Minimum of five (5) years of successful full time clinical practice or completion of 2 years of an accredited residency. Candidates must be able to demonstrate competency commensurate with the full scope of their medical license.

Didactic:  Two (2) years of classroom experience as a faculty member in higher education. Focus on basic sciences is desirable.  Other relevant professional experience may be considered.

Individuals with clinical assignment duties:

• Skilled in effective communication with socioeconomically, educationally, and culturally diverse patients.
• Demonstrated success in the clinical practice of natural medicine.
• Demonstrated success in the business of natural medicine including practice management and practice building.
