Food Is Medicine: NUNM’s Master of Science in Nutrition Program

Seeking a Master’s in Nutrition? Learn how the National University of Naturopathic Medicine offers a unique educational experience.

At NUNM, We Believe That Food Is Medicine

Are you someone who sees the potential in food? Not just someone who loves to cook, but understands that wholesome food, when applied scientifically, has the ability to nourish and sometimes even heal?

Then you’re the perfect candidate for our Master of Science in Nutrition program.

NUNM’s Master of Science in Nutrition (MScN) program is centered on a whole-person approach to wellness and healing, emphasizing whole foods nutrition education.

Students explore how the foods that we consume play a role in our overall health, while also gaining an understanding of how other often overlooked variables — like lifestyle, culture, and our physical environment — shape our attitudes towards food.

The MScN program is rooted in naturopathic principles, teaching students how to choose and prepare foods for the individual, tailored to their needs to effectively prevent and manage chronic disease.

Turn your love of food and community into a fascinating and fulfilling career.

Master of Science In Nutrition: Choose the Path That Supports Your Career Goals

At NUNM, a MScN isn’t a one size fits all degree. This 2-3 year, 66-credit-hour program offers you the opportunity to specialize across four unique areas of nutrition to focus on:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Community Nutrition
  • Culinary Nutrition
  • Environmental Nutrition

These specialized pathways are designed to align with your educational interests while supporting your long-term career goals, opening up professional opportunities across clinical practice, public health and education, culinary arts and sciences, and community support.

Clinical Nutrition vs. Culinary Nutrition

Clinical Nutrition at NUNM is centered on a curriculum for students interested in the medical side of nutrition, where they can apply their learnings in healthcare or nutritional therapy settings.

Graduates will emerge from the MScN program with clinical training in nutrition-specific skills, such as health coaching, evidence-based nutrition interventions, and meal personalization.

Culinary Nutrition at NUNM is a hands-on track that blends the culinary arts with culinary medicine.

Students focusing their studies on Culinary Nutrition will gain culinary and kitchen skills that change attitudes and behaviors around food while also developing expertise in recipe development that supports a food as medicine approach to healthier eating and living.

Educational Consistency with Flexible Options of Study

Both the Clinical and Culinary pathways are based on a combination of natural nutrition theory, nutritional biochemistry, evidence-based psychology, and health coaching to give graduates a content-rich classroom experience, and real-world skills to be applied in their careers.

The MScN program can be taken in-person or online, depending on your lifestyle and learning preferences. Either way you attend, you’re learning the same material, gaining the same knowledge, and will be prepared for the same professional opportunities upon graduation.
