How a Certificate in Massage Therapy Can Strengthen Your ND or Chinese Medicine Practice

Massage Therapy — A Natural Fit for ND and Chinese Medicine

Interested in finding ways to make your Naturopathic or Chinese Medicine more appealing? Consider Massage Therapy, one of the newest program offerings at NUNM.

Earning your certificate in Massage Therapy strengthens the whole-person approach already exemplified in the practice of Naturopathic or Chinese Medicine. You’ll learn techniques that support the body’s natural ability to heal, while offering your patients a familiar, drug-free treatment option.

It’s a way to round out your holistic pain relief education, adding another key modality to your toolbox.

How a Massage Therapy Certificate Strengthens Your Training

While the practice of ND and Chinese Medicine are rigorous and comprehensive, there are still more ways in which you can add practical, hands-on skills to your training.

A Massage Therapy certificate will give you increased expertise in treating joint and muscle pain, providing an alternative (or addition) to acupuncture, hydrotherapy, personalized nutrition, physical therapy, and supplements, supporting your integrative care techniques.

Doctors of Naturopathic and Chinese Medicine specialize in the non-pharmaceutical treatment of pain and stress. Understanding the key methods of massage can help to stimulate blood flow, alleviate back pain, headaches, neck tension, and stress, or help relax muscles after acupuncture.

Massage Therapy at NUNM

NUNM is the oldest accredited naturopathic medical school in North America. Our goal, as it always has been, is to advance education, healthcare and research in the art and science of natural medicine.

Our new Massage Therapy certification provides students with yet another avenue to bring optimal wellness to their communities.

For students who are already immersed in the ND and Chinese Medicine programs, you can add Massage Therapy certification with no additional application fee required.

For ND and Chinese Medicine students, we recommend that you earn the Massage Therapy certification in tandem with your main degree.

Typically, you’ll complete your Massage Therapy certification in the second year of your program, and you’ll be eligible to sit for your Massage Therapy exam and earn licensure in Oregon during year-three of your ND or Chinese Medicine studies.

NUNM’s Massage Therapy program is a hands-on, supervised clinical training experience. It focuses on numerous aspects of therapeutic massage techniques, including Swedish massage, trigger point therapy, and deep tissue massage.

In addition, you learn more about pain science, functional anatomy, and kinesiology, take a deeper dive into making clinical assessments and strengthen your patient communication and documentation skills, all of which further support your ND or Chinese Medicine education.

One thing to consider as you’re entering ND or Chinese Medicine studies: If you’re already in school, why not add skills at no-cost that will help you deliver more comprehensive, integrative care techniques to patients and increase your career options?

Is a Massage Therapy Certificate Right For You?

If you’re an ND or Chinese Medicine student and aren’t sure if you have the bandwidth or mindset to add Massage Therapy certification to your plate, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you want to practice hands-on work with patients?
  • Is treating stress, pain, and chronic illness interesting to you?
  • Do you want to graduate with a wider range of skills, even if it takes more effort?

If your instinct is to answer “yes” to one or more of these questions, then we’d encourage you to consider studying Massage Therapy as an ND or Chinese Medicine student.

At NUNM, we believe that our ND and Chinese Medicine students will love having the option to add Massage Therapy Certification to their list of credentials.

The healing power of touch has a wide variety of applications in a whole-person approach to care and treatment. Whether you plan to open your own practice or work in a different setting after graduation, having Massage Therapy certification makes you more marketable as a professional. It’s a win-win.
