On Curiosity, Growth, and Finding the Right Path in Medicine
Finding the Right Path
For Anastasia Rempel, the journey into naturopathic medicine began during a time of uncertainty.
“It was the middle of COVID, and I knew that there was something new coming my way,” she shares. “Since childhood, I had dreamed of becoming a doctor, but I realized the allopathic path was not the right fit for me.”
While searching for alternatives, an unexpected conversation changed everything. “A close friend mentioned naturopathic medicine and NUNM. Having grown up in Salem, I had no idea this medicine and school even existed. Once I looked into it, I knew it was the right choice.”
Growth Through the Process
Over four years, that initial instinct turned into transformation.
“I have grown tremendously,” Rempel says. “From managing the rigor of medical school to building relationships and taking on new experiences like student government, I have become more curious, thoughtful, and confident.”
Some of the most meaningful parts of the growth happened outside the classroom. “I am most proud of the friendships I have built,” she shares. “These are the people I will call when I have exhausted all my treatment options on a difficult case, and the first ones to celebrate every win.”
A Deeper Understanding of Healthcare
Through her education, her view of healthcare has evolved in important ways.
“Healthcare is not a discipline of absolutes,” she explains. “It requires curiosity, thoughtful questions, and a willingness to sit with complexity.”
Rather than looking for simple answers, Rempel has learned to embrace nuance. “Most of what we encounter as physicians lives in the gray areas. The right path forward is rarely obvious. It is found through honest conversation, and open mind, and curiosity about what we do not yet know.”
That mindset shapes how she sees the future of naturopathic medicine. “I am excited to watch how each of us graduates will go on to impact our communities. There are so many clinicians who will help people thrive and live better lives. There will be more doors open than before.”
The Honor of Speaking
Being selected as a commencement speaker is both meaningful and humbling.
“It is an honor that I do not take lightly,” Rempel says. “It is a privilege and a responsibility to stand before our class and try to capture our shared experience.”
As graduation approaches, the emotions are mixed. “Bittersweet,” she reflects. “Sweet because we are reaching something we have worked toward for so long. Bitter because this time has gone by so quickly.”
She will miss the everyday moments. “Seeing friends in the hallways, stopping to talk with professors, and those ‘aha’ moments when something finally clicks.”
Still, one feeling stands out above the rest. “I am proud of every one of my peers who pushed through challenges and made it to this milestone.”
Support Along the Way
Behind this journey is a strong support system.
“My husband, Alex, has been my greatest supporter,” she shares. “He did not hesitate when I brought up the idea of coming to NUNM, even though it meant moving and putting many things on hold.”
His presence made a difference in both big and small ways. “He has seen me through every moment and continues to be my biggest cheerleader. Even a simple ‘you got this’ text reminded me I was not alone.”
Advice for What Comes Next
For those just beginning their journey, Rempel’s advice is grounded and honest.
“Buckle in,” she says. “It is beautiful, messy, and one of the best things you can give your time to.”
She emphasizes the importance of staying connected to purpose, “Know your why, stay curious, and do not try to do it alone. It is so much better with others.”
As one of four commencement speakers, Rempel’s story reflects both an individual journey and a shared experience. It is a reminder that sometimes the right path is not the one you planned, but the one you discover along the way.
