James Sensenig, ND (’78), devoted his life to the naturopathic profession. An NUNM alumnus, he later served as dean of education. Dr. Sensenig was the founder of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) as our national professional organization, and co-founder of the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM) aimed at engaging philanthropy and raising public awareness of our profession. He was one of the four doctors who established the Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine Institute (FNMI) to codify, preserve, strengthen and advance naturopathic medicine’s unique philosophy, principles and theory of practice. He founded the Naturopathic Medicine Institute (NMI) to preserve, protect, present and promote the vitalistic core of Naturopathy and to call the profession back to its roots. His was the vital force behind CNME, NPLEX and so much more. Dr. Sensenig played a pivotal role in the lives of so many of us. His vision, courage, keen intelligence, and coherent voice remain an example for us all. Too soon he has left us, but he has left us a powerful legacy.
