Donald Spears is a licensed acupuncturist completing his first year of residency at the National University of Natural Medicine. He received his Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from NUNM in 2018, graduating with high honors. Prior to attending medical school, Donald received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.

An interest in evidence-based nutrition, exercise and supplements brought Donald to NUNM where he was introduced to concepts of health emerging through a holistic lens and inspired by nature. He believes that within each individual lies a healing capacity (expressed through the symptoms one seeks help for) communicating the desire to revive its connection with nature; by observing this innate communication, Donald seeks to treat the source of illness while maintaining the holistic integrity of the individual. He elected to complete a one-year residency in Chinese medicine to further train to perceive higher order processes through the guidance of the esteemed NUNM Chinese medicine clinical faculty.

During his six-year medical education, Donald was provided with training in both Western and Eastern medical thought. He completed multiple primary care rotations along with year-long clinical mentorships in cardiopulmonology and gastroenterology. Through his studies in classical Chinese medicine, he was afforded the opportunity to learn multiple styles of acupuncture and body work, including gentle, non-insertive needling techniques.

Outside of the clinic, Donald practices taijiquan, performs guitar and dance spectacles for his cat, Tiger, and marvels with his partner at life’s splendor.
