Dr. Lai Chim Chan is an Associate Professor and Attending Physician of Cardiology and Pulmonology of the College of Naturopathic Medicine at NUNM and NUNM’s Health Centers. She currently serves as the Co-Course Director of the Psychology and Mental Health block and formerly served as the Course Director for the Cardiology and Pulmonology block.

Dr. Chan graduated from NUNM (formerly known as NCNM) in 2014 and completed two years of family medicine residency at NUNM followed by a 3rd year of residency as the Heart and Lung resident shared by NUNM and Center for Natural Medicine.

During her first two years of residency, she completed family medicine rotations in both naturopathic and conventional outpatient clinics. Her third year of residency was spent exclusively studying naturopathic cardiology and pulmonology under Martin Milner, ND. Additionally, she has also spent over two years rotating with a conventional cardiologist in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

As the former Cardiology and Pulmonology Course Director, she helped to develop and implement the Cardiology and Pulmonology curriculum in the ND program. She is continues to serve as the primary instructor of the course and teaches students how to diagnose and manage cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions both in the classroom and clinic. Her clinical interests are primarily in the realm of primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease by way of evidence-informed naturopathic treatment of hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and heart failure.

As of 2022, she is the Co-Course Director of the Psychology and Mental Health block and is responsible for development of the Psychology and Mental Health tutorial curriculum and is an instructor for the course.

She is skilled in the interpretation of 12-lead ECGs and office spirometry and teaches an elective course that allows students to further their skills in these areas.

When not working, Dr. Chan enjoys spending time with her family and friends, bowling, being an amateur photographer, listening to music, and traveling.
