Helfgott Research Institute Investigator Joshua Goldenberg, ND, is the lead author of a new research paper just published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ). The systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of low and very low carbohydrate diets for type 2 diabetes, looking at 23 studies including 1,357 participants. The results suggest that low-carb diets may be considered an effective alternative to other treatments, while monitoring and adjusting diabetes medication as needed. The article concludes that patients who use a low-carb diet for six months may experience greater rates of remission of diabetes without adverse consequences compared with other commonly recommended diets for the management of type 2 diabetes. Limitations to the review include the quality of the studies included in the analysis as well as uncertainty about the safety and efficacy of low-carbohydrate diets when used over longer periods of time.
