Faculty member and naturopathic physician discusses preventive strategies for heart health, resilience and longevity.

National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) faculty member Dr. Emma Neiworth-Petshow recently shared heart health tips in a presentation for the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges (AANMC).
In the presentation, Petshow, a naturopathic physician and associate professor of biomedical sciences at NUNM, discusses how a naturopathic approach to cardiovascular management can improve patient outcomes.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, she notes in her talk, accounting for one in five deaths, and mentions that around eighty percent of cases are preventable.
“As a naturopathic doctor our role is to identify these underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms and use them to guide treatment,” said Petshow, who graduated from NUNM in 2018. “Understanding how all these different factors interact we can create a personalized evidence-based strategy to support long-term heart health.”
Drawing on both research and her clinical experience, she shares the “Essential Eight” with the AANMC audience—a set of lifestyle changes to prevent and manage heart disease.
Additionally, Petshow offers practical advice on heart-healthy nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and build overall resilience.
