Your First year in the Doctor of Acupuncture with a Chinese Herbal Medicine(DAaCHM) Program – In person or Online

Welcome to the journey

Congratulations! When you begin the DAaCHM program at the National University of Natural Medicine, you’re stepping into a world of rich tradition, healing, and transformation. Whether you join us on campus or online, you’ll be immersed in the same rigorous curriculum, supportive community, and hands-on learning that prepares you to become a skilled, thoughtful practitioner.

At NUNM, we know that no two future doctors are exactly alike, that’s why we offer two pathways to begin your DAaCHM journey. Study in-person or online for your first year of the program. This allows you to choose the option that best fits your life and learning style.

Option 1: All In-Person

Our in-person track is the traditional route for those who thrive in collaborative on-campus learning. You’ll build relationships with fellow students, faculty, and patients while gaining hands-on experience from day one.

Best for if you want:

  • Daily face-to-face interaction with faculty and peers.
  • Immersive, hands-on labs and practical training.
  • Immediate access to NUNM’s teaching clinic and campus resources.
  • A structured environment with built-in academic and wellness support.

The in-person experience gives you a strong foundation in acupuncture, herbal medicine, clinical anatomy, and diagnostic skills from the very start.

Option 2: First-Year Online

Our first-year online track offers the same rigorous coursework as the in-person program, delivered in a virtual format. You’ll connect with classmates and instructors through lives sessions and dynamic online platforms.

Best for if you want:

  • Greater flexibility to balance school with work or family commitments.
  • To start your DAaCHM education while staying in your home community.
  • A lower relocation barrier for your first year.
  • High-quality virtual learning designed by experienced Chinese medicine faculty.

After completing your first year online, you’ll join us on the Portland campus in the summer for a month of hands-on lab courses. This ensures you gain the in-person clinical and practical skills you need to transition seamlessly into full-time, on-campus learning for the rest of your program.

How Do I Choose?

There is no wrong answer, both tracks lead to the same degree and prepare you for the same clinical outcomes. The key is to ask yourself:

  • Do I learn best through face-to-face interaction and immediate hands-on practice?
  • Do I need the flexibility to manage other responsibilities while I study?
  • Am I ready to relocate now, or would a gradual transition better suit my circumstances?

No matter which pathway you choose, your first year at NUNM will lay the foundation for a successful career in Chinese medicine.

To learn about both pathways, schedule a call with an Admissions Counselor, or attend an Info Session.
