Overview of Process

In the Clinic:

• Preceptoring is a volunteer role must be provided free of charge to students, with preceptors receiving benefits outlined on our website. Create a Preceptorship page
• Preceptors are expected to be on-site for the duration of student rotations.
• Part of mentorship will include orienting students to the clinic where you will be working. Expect to take some time discussing patient populations, frequent diagnosis, common procedures, clinic policies, HIPPA regulations,and any other information that will help students succeed at your site.
• Each preceptorship student will be unique depending on the individual preceptor and student. Preceptors should review student objectives and expectations for their experience to determine what will work best for each preceptorship. Preceptors may want to direct students to resources and evidence-informed readings that may enhance the clinical experience.
• Preceptors should create a collaborative and respectful environment that will allow support students’ progressive independence in the clinical setting.
• Providing feedback to students is an important part of improving student clinical and communication skills. Preceptors should aim to provide a variety of learning experience including patient care, business practice, and record keeping if applicable (up to 10% of the rotation can be used for administrative duties.) Encourage students to engage with the full spectrum of daily clinical activities and use clear communication to facilitate growth and professional community.
